Beginning from Entebbe, this journey takes you westward to the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains, where the Kilembe Trail leads through changing vegetation zones, beautiful valleys, waterfalls, forests, and rugged alpine landscapes before reaching the legendary Margherita Peak at 5,109 metres.
The trek offers much more than reaching Uganda’s highest point. The summit day provides the most demanding section of the adventure, involving technical glacier terrain, ropes, crampons, and an ice axe under the guidance of experienced mountain guides. After descending from the mountains, the experience continues in Queen Elizabeth National Park with game drives, a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, and a safari in Ishasha, an area renowned for its tree-climbing lions.
By combining mountain trekking, dramatic scenery, cultural encounters, and classic African wildlife viewing, this 12-day itinerary provides a diverse way to experience some of Uganda’s most remarkable natural attractions in one journey.

Day 2: Trek from the Trekkers’ Hostel to Sine Hut
After an early morning briefing at the Kilembe trailhead, you will meet your mountain guides and porters before beginning the trek from the Trekkers’ Hostel at 1,450 metres.
The first part of the route passes through farmland before reaching the park entrance at approximately 1,727 metres, where you will complete the registration process. Beyond the gate, the landscape changes as you enter the Afromontane forest.
This section of the Rwenzori is rich in vegetation, with tall trees, moss-covered branches, climbing vines and abundant birdlife creating a distinctive mountain-forest atmosphere. Depending on conditions, you may hear chimpanzee calls or encounter blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and three-horned chameleons.
As the trail gains elevation, the terrain gradually becomes more demanding. You will cross small streams and negotiate narrow sections of the trail before eventually reaching Sine Hut at 2,596 meters.
Sine Camp is located on a ridge and provides a peaceful place to spend the night. Enock’s Falls, situated about 200 metres from the camp, offers an additional natural attraction. The camp consists of simple wooden huts and communal areas where trekkers can relax while listening to the sounds of the surrounding forest
Starting elevation: 1,450m
Sine Hut: 2,596m
Distance: 9.5 km
Walking time: 5–6 hour
Overnight: Sine Camp

Day 3: Sine Camp to Mutinda Camp
After breakfast, you will continue higher into the Rwenzori landscape, passing through Kalalama Camp at 3,134 metres.
The route enters the bamboo-mimulopsis vegetation zone, where the trail becomes progressively steeper. During wet periods, some sections can be muddy and require careful footing. Tall bamboo, hanging moss and dense vegetation give this part of the hike a distinctive atmosphere.
As you climb further, the vegetation gradually changes into the heather-rapanea zone. Giant heather trees covered in moss and colourful lichens dominate the landscape, while mountain streams flow across the rocky terrain.
The trail alternates between ridges, valleys and stream crossings, with occasional views of waterfalls and alpine vegetation. Eventually, you arrive at Mutinda Camp at approximately 3,588 metres, surrounded by giant heathers and lobelias.
If you still have the energy in the afternoon, you can undertake an optional climb to Mutinda Lookout at 3,975 metres. From the lookout, you can enjoy broad views toward the Rwenzori peaks, Kasese and Lake George.
This additional climb also serves as useful acclimatization before you continue toward the higher elevations.
Starting elevation: 2,596m

Day 4: Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the high-altitude environment of the Rwenzori Mountains.
The scenery changes considerably as you encounter alpine terrain characterized by wet and boggy areas, tussock grasses and everlasting flowers. Extra care is required on slippery or waterlogged sections, especially during rainy conditions.
The trail passes through the Mutinda and Namusangi valleys, where waterfalls, steep slopes and expansive mountain views create an impressive setting.
At approximately 4,100 metres, you reach Bugata Camp, an important overnight stop for acclimatization. The higher elevation means thinner air and cooler temperatures, giving your body further opportunity to adjust before the summit stages.
Along the way, you may see giant lobelias, moss-covered cliffs and unusual alpine plants. Birdlife and mountain-adapted wildlife may also be encountered.
The evening provides time to rest and speak with your guides about the mountain environment, safety considerations and preparation for the more demanding sections ahead.

Although the ascent requires effort, the elevated position provides impressive views toward Mount Stanley, Mount Baker and Mount Speke.
After crossing the pass, the route descends into a valley characterized by moss, giant groundsels and lobelias. The area is also suitable for bird watching, and you may have the opportunity to see the colourful Malachite Sunbird.
The trail later climbs along a ridge above a deep valley before reaching Hunwick’s Camp at 3,874 metres. From this area, you can enjoy views toward glaciers and surrounding peaks.

From the lake, you continue upward toward Scott Elliott Pass before following a ridge to Margherita Camp at 4,495 metres.
The camp is situated among large rocks that provide some protection from the mountain winds. It is also associated with the historic campsite used during the Duke of Abruzzi’s 1906 expedition.
Depending on conditions and your energy levels, there is an optional opportunity to climb Mount Baker. Although relatively short, the climb is challenging and provides exceptional perspectives of Margherita Peak, Mount Stanley and the surrounding glaciers.
