Cheptegei Peak

Cheptegei Peak is one of the less well-known but equally intriguing summits located inside the Rwenzori mountains. In which year did Cheptegei peak get named?

The Rwenzori Mountains are a beautiful and diverse mountain range in Eastern Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Well-known for their tough hiking paths, unique animals, and breathtaking scenery. Honored in December 2020 when the government of Uganda designated Cheptegei Peak as one of these mountains, Joshua Cheptegei was among the most well-known long-distance runners from Uganda and a world record holder.

This name honors Cheptegei’s great achievements as well as national pride and the ability of sports to unite people and inspire their imaginations.

Decision to name Cheptegei peak.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority’s (UWA) suggestion to memorialize Joshua Cheptegei by naming a mountain in the Rwenzori Mountains was supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities. The announced objective of the initiative was to honor Cheptegei for his sports achievements and worldwide ambassadorial activity.

Along with local communities and the administration, the people were quite in favor of the choice. A priority for the government was Cheptegei contributions to the pride and reputation of the nation.

Geographical position.

Recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its great biodiversity, Rwenzori mountain National Park boasts Cheptegei Peak and other amazing natural features. The mountain lies inside the main Rwenzori massif in addition to other well-known heights such Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker. One of the prominent summits in the Rwenzori range, Cheptegei Peak towers about 4,240 meters (13,910 ft) above sea level.

However, it remained unclear to travelers until this year in May 2024 when a group of 6 individuals from Spain, led by Rwenzori expeditions, booked an expedition to explore the Rwenzori Mountains and reach the summit of this alternative peak, as recommended by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The initial cohort embarked on their trek on 18/05/2024 with the objective of reaching the summits of Cheptegei peak and Mount Baker within a span of 5 days.
