Day 1: Nyakalengija (1615m) to Nyabitaba Camp (2651m) – Entering the Rwenzori Rainforest
The first day begins at Nyakalengija after an early breakfast. Hikers attend a comprehensive briefing, measure luggage, and meet the essential team: guides, porters, rangers, and chefs. The group is then transferred to Mihunga Gate for park registration before the trek begins.
The trail quickly enters montane rainforest, alive with the calls of monkeys and the songs of birds. Streams frequently cross the path, making careful footing essential. Early along the route, hikers encounter River Kyoho, followed by River Mahoma and River Mubuku, each providing scenic resting points, natural water features, and the soothing sound of rushing mountain water.

Day 2: Nyabitaba (2651m) to Bujuku Camp (3962m) – Bamboo Heather, and afro-alpine Zones
Wake up for an early morning breakfast and start the hike. As day 2 marks the transition from dense rainforest to bamboo forests, eventually reaching the heather zone and open afro-alpine landscape. The hike begins with a gradual ascent toward John Matte Camp, crossing landmarks like the Kurt Shafer Bridge which is a close to the confluence between river Bujuku and Mubuku. Along the way, trekkers encounter rich flora, including Solanum nigrum and Dracaena afromontana, while birdlife continues to impress with species such as the Rwenzori Apalis resonating through the canopy.
The bamboo forest zone provides a serene environment, with rustling leaves and distant bird calls creating a peaceful atmosphere. Trees such as Philippia trimera are common, while mosses and low scrubs cover the forest floor. Several resting points, including Omukomujunju and Omukengoba, offer opportunities for snacks and photos. At Nyamuleju, hikers often rest while taking in panoramic views. From John Matte, the trail descends slightly toward the Bujuku River, crossing the Bukurungu Trail and Lower Bigo Bog. Mount Gasi rises prominently, while Helichrysum stuhlmannii (everlasting flowers) adds color to the rocky terrain. Continuing past Bigo Hut, a junction for Mount Gasi and Mount Emin hikers, the trail reaches the Upper Bigo Bog, rich with alpine plants like Lobelia bequaertii and Lycapodium clavatum.

From here, the ascent becomes more strenuous, with switchbacks weaving through rocky terrain and heather-laden slopes.
Hikers experience the unique afro-alpine flora, including giant lobelias, groundsels, and Helichrysum species. Snow patches/glacier and icy rocks appear closer to the summit, requiring careful footing. The final day of the trek begins breakfast and with the descent from Guy Yeoman Camp back toward Nyakalengija via Nyabitaba Camp. The trail follows the Central Circuit downhill, gradually returning through the afro-alpine, heather, and bamboo zones previously traversed. Hikers experience the contrast of ascending earlier stages with the descent, noticing the intricate streams, mossy forest floors, and unique flora that define each zone. Pass via Kichuchu to Nyabitaba camp.
Nyabitaba Camp provides an opportunity for lunch before completing the final stretch to Mihunga Gate.
